Since you’ve read this far, do you want to hear a cool thing I learned? It might make you feel better. Or mad. Maybe both.
Emotional dysregulation sits at the core of neurodivergent experiences because our brains rely more heavily on emotional processing (hello, very active amygdala) and use the prefrontal cortex less consistently or efficiently than neurotypical brains.
SO, that means not only do our brains not reliably self-regulate, but that a lot of the people telling you to “just calm down already,” or looking at you like “where did that outburst come from?”, don’t realize their bodies are quietly helping them more quickly return to baseline and copacetic state.
Instead, our autonomic nervous system takes the driver’s seat and the very real physical sensations related to the emotions that we experience in these heightened state can push us rapidly into fight or flight. Either way we are ready to GO.
So no, we can’t just “calm down, Sheila”. (Love you Sheila).
We have to actively choose regulation. We have to create it on purpose, through supports, structures, and tools, even while our entire processing system is already operating at full volume.
What I want to leave you with here; My biggest take away that made all the difference in my life:
We aren’t broken and in need of repair.
We are wired differently.
And if we’re wired differently, we don’t need more shame or willpower.
We need a different manual.
